Our Annual General Meeting - Newport RFC, 2008

It was with great anticipation that the RMS AGM welcomed Keith Jarrett as this year's guest speaker. Keith spoke candidly about his early years at Monmouth School, where as a school boy Cliff Jones the head of Welsh selectors spoke to him after a school game vs Llandovery and told him he would be in the final Welsh trial for the 1967 season. Keith was gobsmacked.

Keith was selected at full back, a position he had never played prior to the game against England in 1967. As for preparation, he was told just to stand 30 yards behind David Watkins !

During the game our very own Phil Atkinson who was watching the game with his father, shouted so loudly after Keith scored his infamous try, that he dislocated his jaw ! - The first period of 10 mins silence since ;-) ...

Keith spoke about his experiences with the1968 Lions, and the fact that illness pre tour and injury after a spear tackle during the Rhodesia game cost him the majority of the tour. However the audience were left in no doubt about his pride at being selected for the Lions.

He later toured with Wales to NZ and Australia, as Keith stated he had almost travelled the world by 21 through his rugby experiences.

Keith was lured into Rugby League after Barrow came to visit him at his home, he decided to ask for a fee that he thought they would reject - they accepted it, and the rest was history for Welsh rugby.

Keith also talked about his cricket career, he made his debut for Glamorgan vs India and was out first ball LBW. A marked difference to his rugby career.

After the talk, Keith chatted and signed various pieces of memorabilia. He left everyone in no doubt they had just spent an hour in the company of a first class gentleman, a great sportsman and great ambassador for the game

A big thank you to Keith Jarrett ....
