Our Annual General Meeting - Newport RFC 2013

A repeat visit to Newport RFC, had the pleasure of spending the afternoon catching up with old friends and listening to the wonderful, elegant and humorous memories of Mr Gareth Evans

Gareth entertained the AGM with tales of his early career and rugby memories. He has been brought up watching the tourists play Newport in the 1960's and always had a dream of representing the Black and Ambers. Initially he played a game for Llanelli and then moved onto Cross Keys RFC, where he initially played in the centre before moving to the wing. Gareth finally achieved his childhood dream and moved to Newport RFC in the 74/75 season.

In 1976 he was selected for the Welsh squad, where on attending his first training session JPR Williams pointed to him and asked the established starts ""Who is he ...??!" ... in this period Gerald Davies and JJ Williams had a very firm grip on the wing positions, however after Gerald suffered a twinge Gareth's opportunity arose against France in Paris in 1977. Soon afterwards a surprise call up (with Elgan Rees who was uncapped) for the 1977 Lions followed.

Gareth's memories were very positive of the tour despite the relentless bad weather and the ferocity of the local press. The daily allowance for the players was £2.50 :). Gareth played 19 games on the tour including 3 test match appearances However a series on injuries including a depressed cheek bone on the Wales tour to Australia hampered his chances. Eventually Gerald retired which was to provide Gareth with the moment he had been waiting for to establish himself in the Wales team, however he then broke his jaw in a game against Llanelli. He returned to the game and broke his jaw for the second time. This sadly meant that Gareth's career was over before the age of 30.

Thanks to the several stall holders who where in attendance, Newport RFC for hosting us and a big thank to Mr Gareth Williams for a fantastic afternoon.
