In June 1953 the Wallabies travelled to South Africa, The tourists were Captained by centre ‘Herbert John Solomon’ the team would play 27 matches on tour lasting over 3 months, including 4 test matches against the Springboks, The hosts proved too strong winning the series 3 tests to 1.
During this period of time the Australian national side wore a Green Jersey, as to not to experience a clash of colour on the field ‘with the Springboks traditionally wearing green’ the host nation would change their strip to white, with ‘1953’ below the Springbok.

White Springbok Jerseys remain hugely popular among Jersey collectors. Once Australia changed their kit to Gold, pretty much the only occasions SA would wear white Jerseys would be when Ireland tour there.
