Frank Laidlaw’s 1971 British Lions Scrapbook

This comprehensive scrapbook was compiled for Frank Laidlaw during the 1971 British Lions tour by The first XV West Boys High School.

Frank Laidlaw’s comments on the scrapbook:

On a Lions tour to New Zealand each player is adopted by a school or academy. When the tour gets to the town where there is a rugby match to play the Lion adopted is invited to the school to an assembly to give them a talk. When I arrived at assembly at West Lake Boys High School and walking in to the assembly I was greeted with a Maori welcome from the boys who were putting together my scrapbook and given a Maori club made from a local hardwood tree as a peace offering. As you can imagine it was just a brief moment on the day before the game and it was not until I got home and after a few weeks the scrapbook arrived.

Inside the scrapbook

Peter Douglas-Davies -
I was out of the country when I purchased the scrapbook from Frank and personally don’t think my mother was too impressed when the postman knocked the door with the delivery as she couldn’t pick it up. I told her I bought a scrapbook, but didn’t realise the scale of it.
